Maternal Instinct
This is the flier I created for my first show at Viva Espresso in Burlington in 2008. Viva prides itself on being kid and mom-friendly in atmosphere and food. From the local and organic food offerings to the play area for the kids, Viva has been a wonderful spot for our family to meet with friends and share coffee in the morning. Maternal Instinct was my opportunity to show love for the scene, and to help brighten Burlington during another of our notoriously challenging winters. Stickers, melamine plates and numerous prints were prepared especially for the show.
Solar 01
24″x24″, Archival giclee on stretched canvas. Solar 01 celebrates the Sun as the center of our existence and the provider for all that we know as Life. From warmth to light to the gift of growth, the Sun ranks prominently among our most accurate icons of Divinity.
Spring Ribbon Series
24″x36″ each, Archival giclee on stretched poly-satin material. The Spring ribbons bring a brilliant burst of color the Maternal Instinct series. Based on simple patterns, the ribbons celebrate Mother Earth’s perennial changing of seasons and the joy of new growth.
Maternal Instinct
24″x36″, Archival giclee on stretched poly-satin material. Maternal Instinct celebrates the comforting (and often marginalized) presence of the Great Ma in all elements of existence. Whether it be in male or female gender individuation; or in the mother’s role in delivering new life; or in the positive and negative duality of energy, masculine and feminine forces marry and become all that we know of this Life and the next.
Mantrala
This is the mantrala (mantra vs. mandala) that I made for the backs of one of the decals that was distributed at this show. While the image was placed in an unassuming location, it’s nonetheless very special to me. The wheel includes important symbols along with thoughts from several of the world’s great religions. This mantrala (or similar variations) have since appeared in other instances in my work.
